GOING ONE STEP AND BEYOND Review of the Team One Step Beyond’s progress in The Butcombe British Shoot Out Championships Saturday September 20th at The Riviera Centre in Torquay was the date and the setting the team One Step Beyond faced their biggest challenge to date, this was going to be the final hurdle in their quest for glory. The Holy Grail was in touching distance but could One Step Beyond do it? Not the ultimate prize they craved but a trophy to take back to Weymouth and one to make the gruelling qualification worthwhile, so a happy ending to this journey. 2014 in the Butcombe British Championships had been a successful year for One Step Beyond as they were undefeated in qualification at home and away traveling to Glastonbury and Highbridge besting the teams The Cider Heads and the Basin. Once disposed of those worthy opponents we were on the big stage ready to take on more of the country’s finest Skittles Teams and to prevail as Champions. So now in the Palace of Competition, the Rivera Centre in Torquay we come across our first road block to our road to glory, our first round opponents were Satellite Scorchers Hoppers. So the game started and for the first 3 hands it looked business as usual as we took a strong lead but if skittles has taught me anything it is never take anything for granted as our opponents started showing a spirited comeback which didn’t sit well in our camp and caused us to press the panic button and dismantling our early good work. Game finished and The Hoppers beat us 348 to our 341, a very close match but one that hurt us as it was the Team’s first defeat in 2014 and the loss that wrecked our dream, the mood in the camp had gone sour but all wasn’t lost as the Prestige of winning the Mixed Plate would be an honour. So who would try and stop this team with a new focus and self-belief? Only last year’s plate winners and fellow Weymouth team the Motley Crew, The legendary side that was partly responsible for destroying our 2013 qualification campaign were hoping to send us home sad faced once again but time would heal all wounds as we booked our place in the semi Finals with an impressive display beating our rivals by 35 pins as we hit 230 to their 195. After beating the former Champions are confidence was higher than the sun and we went into the semi-finals all guns blazing as our opponents Wool Misfits felt our wrath and we saw them off with yet another fine display of skittling class hitting 199 to their lacklustre 177, we had finally realized our destiny as The final was on the horizon, on top of that mountain was our prize, one final climb and we could take our place in the history books as the first Mixed Plate Winners under its new sponsorship Butcombe Brewerys. Our opponents for the Final were Saints and Sinners, our biggest game in our 3 year history was upon us, so game faces on, the game was a very close affair but we always managed to keep our noses in front but it was the last throw of the game that was going to make us Champs or chumps. We had played our last hand and now our destiny was literally in the laps of the Skittles God’s our opponents threw well and it got to their last Man who needed 16 to win so the first ball was going to be make or break, a good first ball left him with a stick up chance and a stick up he got leaving him 7 to crown his team Mixed Plate Champions, So an anxious wait for the outcome, shot taken and the ball rolled down the alley only managing to take 3 pins on its way down, game over and we did it! We won, we came to win and win we did. Weymouth has a team to be proud of and that team are One Step Beyond the Butcombe British Championships Mixed Plate winners of 2014 One Step Beyonds Official Press Officer Greg Black
