GOODBYE FAMILIAR: Today I stabilized myself after the storm that was last week. I read something my mentor, Dov Baron posted on my timeline: ‘One of the ways you will know you have changed is that the past will arrive and ask you if youd like to come back to the familiar. The fact that you recognize it for what it is means you have already changed.’ Last week, I had some new headshots taken. This evening, I was sent the photos – the quality was beautiful, but the end result is not the ‘real’ me. Included in the photos were the headshots of my two friends. They were stunning – their energy, their essence, was captured beautifully in every photo. So, Nigel (my ego) started off on one … what a wasted opportunity; why couldn’t I have looked ‘natural’ like my friends, why was my smile the same in EVERY single photo? I felt so deflated. And then I realised, as Dov had said, the past had arrived – again – and asked me to return to the familiar: criticizing and comparing myself. THAT felt crap. I stopped and looked through the photos again … actually there were 4 taken outside in sub-zero temperatures(!) that were really quite nice. I’ve included one below – and I’m pretty pleased with it! But here’s the clanger: when I was having my photos taken, I felt that conflict going on in my head – it was as though part of me wanted to burst out naturally, but a stronger part of me that day needed me to give my usual ‘camera smile’. Somehow, that was familiar and much safer, which is why it felt so uncomfortable. Interesting stuff. I do what I do. I’m so tired of familiar! Yet I’m grateful for another opportunity for me to observe how easily I listen to Nigel, and how much easier it’s becoming to ignore him Have you caught yourself listening to old programmes? Doesn’t it feel great to ignore them?!! @DovBaron #Authentic #Speaker Academy for #Leadership asaleadership
