GOVERNMENT DID NOT CONSTRUCT THE PRESIDENT’S HOME IN MOSU. For the record Government wishes to reassure the public that neither the BDF nor anyone else in Government was involved in the construction of H.E. the President’s home at Mosu. Neither was the house paid for by Government. This fact was communicated to the Guardian newspaper by the Office of the President on 23/10/13 in response to a questionnaire received by the said newspaper on the previous afternoon. Given the above facts we are concerned that a front page article by the Guardian nonetheless makes the unsubstantiated and false allegation that: “Two years before President Ian Khama’s inauguration, a team of officials, including Botswana Defence Force (BDF) officers, was dispatched to Mosu to begin construction of Khama’s private holiday compound complete with airfield at taxpayers’ expense.” We reiterate that there is absolutely no truth to the above allegation. His Excellency’s private home at Mosu was built at his own private expense. As we also have previously communicated, we further wish to reaffirm that the planned airstrip at Mosu will be on public land, located outside of His Excellency compound, and shall thus fall under the jurisdiction of the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB).
