GRACE POES BODY LANGUAGE Just the other night, I watched the news over CNN Philippines on the commemoration of the 10th death anniversary of movie star and 2004 presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr. Wife Susan Roces, daughter Grace Poe, relatives and friends attended the mass. Vice President Jejomar Binay was conspicuously present at the mass. But this is only half of the story. The other half was how Grace Poe stayed away a little far from Binay. The body language said everything. At one point, the news video clip showed the two standing together, but I could sense how an annoyed Grace Poe reacted on the pestering presence of the Vice President. While the Vice President seemingly wanted to be seen standing side by side with Grace Poe, the latter tried to stay at least a meter away from him, as if Binay is afflicted with an incurable disease like leprosy or as if she was trying to avoid any unwanted impression that Binays attendance there could lead to something politically significant. Even her smile in front of Binay did not appear authentic. There was no warmth; only civility of formality characterized their interaction. All I could see from Grace Poes face was a lingering discomfort. To her eternal credit, Grace Poe succeeded in avoiding any misimpression that could be created by her interaction with the Vice President. When I was majoring sociology in college, one of my teachers introduced us to the theory of propinquity, which narrates how physical distance characterizes human interaction. Physical distance dictates the intimacy, intensity, and emotions of human interaction. Hence, a married couple who stays under one roof and sleeps on a single bed interact more intimately than a couple who lives in separate houses or rooms. Classmates in a single room interact closely than those who are not classmates. Grace Poes successful attempt to send the body language of avoidance to the Vice President was a dunk shot. It showed she did not welcome his attempt to be a little warm or chummy with him. She had dictated that staying a little away from him should characterize their relations as professional political leaders.
