GREAT ULTRA RARE UNRELEASED REEL TAPE OF ZANNY GARAGE PSYCH!!! SON OF PSILICYBIN & THUNDERSTONE BY RON WILLIAMS WORDS: PLEASE READ! 89th Congress was a social group of friends a year younger than me, mostly. I joined the band in Dec 69. 1st recording at Spar was in Feb 70 w/ Travis Turk engineer. The 89th C band had played several times (including the disaster at the Union Hall) previous to me joining. This was recorded at Spar Records in Nashville early in 1970. I dont think it was ever released. This is the first recording of famed drummer, Harry Stinson (on Son of Psilicybin), who now plays with the Vinyl Kings and Marty Stuarts band. Harry was the oldest at 18, I (Ron) was 17 everyone else was 16, except Mike St Leon, who was 15. Michael Saint Leon now is the owner of the Switchyard Studio in Nashville and fronts The Vagrant Saints. Kirk Beasley did the vocal and bass on Son of Psilicybin, Johnny Duke was the vocalist and drummer on Thunderstone. Michael remains a great friend, and I correspond with Harry occasionally. Ralph, Kirk, and Johnny, Ive lost touch with. Thunderstone was to be the A track of the single. I could only find a bleed through track off a 1/4 inch reel-to-reel tape - so thats why the audio is so muddled. This track was the first to use the phasing effect that was recorded in Nashville. Engineer, Travis Turk did the phasing by wrapping masking tape around one of the capistans of one of the two Ampex Recorders running simultaneously. I (Ron) play lead on Son of Psilicybin (which I wrote); Michael plays lead on his composition Thunderstone. On both tracks, Kirk plays bass, and Ralph Schuller plays piano. Son of Psilicybin was recorded live; Thunderstone utilized several over dubs and effects: Mikes lead guitar solo was punched in backwards to get the weird effect. If any copies were ever released (Thunderstone b/w Easy Rider), it would be one of the rarest 45s of garage band/psychedelic records ever!
