Gambia Re-Arrest Ex-Justice Minister Jobarteh, Pa Harry Jammeh (APA) – Gambian Police on Tuesday re-arrested the former Justice minister Lamin Jobarteh and his former Solicitor General Pa Harry Jammeh barely few hours after they were granted bail by a court in Banjul, the Gambian capital. Former Attorney General Jobarteh alongside his co-accused the former Solicitor General and Legal Secretary, Pa Harry Jammeh, were re-arrested by the police shortly after they left the court premises. Jobarteh is charged with four counts of abuse of office and one count of official corruption whilst Jammeh is charged with abuse of office and neglect of official duty. Magistrate Dawda Jallow granted the accused persons bail on conditions that they must not go outside of the boundaries of the Greater Banjul Area without an order of the court until their trial commences. The applicants, the court ordered, must stay indoors at their respective residences at night between 7pm to 6am. He had added that the duo must report to the Banjul Police Station between 8am and 4pm each Monday and Friday. Furthermore, the defendants must not communicate in any manner whatsoever, whether directly or indirectly, with any of the potential prosecution witnesses. They should also provide two Gambian sureties each and the sureties must enter into recognizance of D500,000 (about US$14,000) for each applicant, depose to an affidavit of means and deposit one title deed on behalf of each applicant and a valid national Identity Card. According to the court, in the event of a failure by any of the defendants to comply, these conditions shall be vacated and all police officers are authorised to re-arrest the applicants and take them into custody forthwith and keep them there until trial or further order of the court. The case is adjourned to 2nd July, 2013.
