Gambia’s Withdrawal From Commonwealth Is ‘Non-Negotiable’ (JollofNews) – President Yahya Jammeh of the Gambia has maintained that his decision to pull his country from the Commonwealth of Nations is ‘final and non-negotiable’. The Gambia Government last Wednesday announced that it was pulling out of the Commonwealth with "immediate effect" without giving any prior notice to the Commonwealth Secretariat in London. The decision was condemned by Gambian pro-democracy activist, opposition leaders and human rights organisations, who have called on Mr Jammeh to rescind his decision to protect, preserve and promote the Gambia’s interest and integrity. But in statement delivered Sunday night on state television, Mr Jammeh said his decision is ‘final and not subject to negotiation’. “The decision to leave the Commonwealth was made based on the principle that we do not want to be part of any colonial or neo-colonial institution. Changing our decision is far-fetched because the Commonwealth remains at best a neo-colonial institution and at worst an animal farm, an idea which the Gambia will never subscribe to.” Mr Jammeh told fellow African presidents who are planning to send their envoys to Banjul for discussions on the matter not to waste their tax payers’ money. He said has reached a ‘point of no return’ in his decision to leave the Commonwealth. He reassured his allies that the ‘non-negotiable’ decision to leave the Commonwealth is not against individual member state and would not affect their bilateral relations. Written by PK Jarju
