Gambling on the river is now a memory . . . From the book From Above: the Missouri River Revealed Gambling on the riverfront in Sioux City was kicked off in 1993 with the opening of the Sioux City Sue. The boat was replaced a year later by the larger Belle of Sioux City. The gambling boats featured Missouri River cruises from spring through fall until the state lifted the requirement that gambling boats be sea worthy and navigate the river several times a day. Missouri River Historic Development, known as MHRD, holds the gaming license for riverboat gambling boats and through fees collected per passenger and gaming taxes, millions of dollars have been distributed to Sioux City and Woodbury County and countless non profit organizations in the area. The Argosy Gaming Corporation took over as the Belle arrived and later renamed the gambling boats Argosy.
