Game day story from wvuhockey.org PAYBACK! Freshman Tyler Collards goal two minutes into the game held up as West Virginia beat #9 Ohio 1-0 at the Morgantown Ice Arena on Saturday afternoon. The game avenged a 8-1 loss to the Bobcats the previous night in Athens, Ohio. Collard converted a Gerard Clayon pass off the left goal post, giving unbeaten Ohio their first defict of the season. From there, West Virginia showed a total commitment to team defence, repeatledy blocking and deflecting shots from Ohios skilled forwards and defensemen. When Ohio shots got through to the net, Schaetzle was spectacular, stopping 38 Bobcat shots. Down a goal heading into the third, Ohio had a number of scoring opportunities, becoming progressively more frustrated with each passing moment. That frustration peaked with about 5 minutes remaining in the contest when a late hit by Ohio forward Pat Spellicy on Mountaineer Harrison Colby put the Bobcats down a man at a crucial point in the contest. WVU Head Coach Paul Taibi called the win among the most satisfying of his 20 year coaching career. The victory marked the second time the D1 Mountaineers have knocked a top 10 opponent in Morgantown over the past year. Last November, WVU knocked off #4 Iowa State in Overtime. Game Notes - Ohio took a bench minor penalty at the start of the game for incorrectly submitting their starting line-up. The error proved costly as Collards goal was scored at the end of the Mountaineer power play. - In addition to assisting on Collards goal, freshman forwards Frankie Gerbasi and Gerard Clayton blocked numerous shots, frustrating Ohios high scoring defensemen. - West Virginia had 14 shots on goal for the second consecutive game. - The win over Ohio was the first for West Virginia over the Bobacts in more than 6 years. Next weekend the Mountaineers host three games at the Morgantown Ice Arena. On Friday night at 9:30 p.m., WVU begins league play against Slippery Rock University. On Saturday and Sunday, another top 10 opponent arrives to town as the Mountaineers will play Stonybrook University. Puck drop on Saturday is 4:00 p.m. and gametime for Sunday is 10:30 a.m. Fans unable to attend the games can catch the action on U92 FM or via Livestream.
