‘Geelani misses 17 Friday prayers in a row’ Hurriyat (G) opposes proposed Indo-Pak meet Chairman Hurriyat (G) Syed Ali Geelani who is under house arrest was notallowed to offer the Friday prayers yesterday, a spokesperson of the factionsaid in a statement. He condemned the restrictions and said that since his (Geelani’s) arrival to Valley on March 7, he has been placed under house arrest and today on 17th consecutive Friday was not permitted to offer prayers. “A writ petition in this regard was filed in High Court and the sitting judge reserved its decision which is again annoying. The delay has caused denial of basic and fundamental right to a person and his liberty has been curbed. The unconstitutional curbs and restrictions have caused inconvenience to Geelani and he is being barred from performing religious and political obligations,” the spokesperson said adding Hurriyat (G) seeks judicial intervention and immediate legal and moralrelief. Meanwhile, disagreeing with the proposed meetingof Indo-Pak leaders in Srinagar or Muzaffarabad Hurriyat (G) said the faction“in principle opposes” the said meet saying India has occupied the state through aggression and its military power. In a statement issued here Hurriyat (G) spokesperson said it was ironical and invitation extended by subjugated people would definitely have an effect on the disputed nature and status of Kashmir issue. “India in order to justify its occupation would exploit the said invitation and the negotiations,” the spokesperson said. Hurriyat (G) while justifyingthe resolution of the Kashmir issue through international intervention added that the issue is sensitive, pending and recognized at internationallevel. “Dialogue held in a third country would be much more appropriate and beneficial,” Hurriyat (G) spokesman, Ayaz Akbar said adding it is an established and concrete policy of Hurriyat led by Syed Ali Geelani that it would in all circumstances avoid confrontation with individuals and resistant groups and won’t hurt anyone’s self esteem or sentiments. “Since the freedom movement takes priority over all interests and profit,so it is necessary and we have decided to put our stand in a dignified and courteous manner. Honest opinions on issues related to the freedom struggle of the nation would be placedbefore people,” Ayaz said. Hurriyat spokesman said the Kashmir dispute has been discussed in international forums, and 18 resolutions were passedin United Nations and a bilateral pact was framed even at Tashkent in Soviet Union. Hurriyat (G) from the day ofits inception has reiterated its stand that unless Kashmir issue is resolved, the threat to international peace will remain there and would lead to a negative impact over the cultural or other social activities, Ayaz further said. “We invite all sensitive andlearned people to deliberate over the issues with cool mind and study our stand which is based on facts and principle,” he said.
