Genre Semantics: Over the past two years I have been - TopicsExpress

Genre Semantics: Over the past two years I have been experimenting with, and have experienced some new movements, underground movements as well as above the ground (commercially acceptable) movements in music and at dance events. My problem is this; I love 90% of electronic dance music available today (electronic dance music is not to be confused with the EDM genre exploding at the moment). Everyones perception on music genres are different, it means different things to different people. Music is a very subjective thing. To me Electronic Dance Music is all encompassing of all dance music generated by computers, synthesizers and electronic toys available. As an example; Trance, House & Techno will be sub genres of Electronic Dance Music as Electronic Dance Music is the mothership of all dance music. I know views might differ here, and there are no consensus on this currently but EDM should be a sub genre of house and dare I say it; Trance, which in turn are sub genres of the mothership; Electronic Dance Music (not to be confused with EDM as a sub genre of House or Trance). In essence, as a DJ, I am a music lover. To say I only love underground music, or only one dance genre would be limiting to myself and my enjoyment of music as a whole. It would be silly and short sighted not to enjoy a particular sound/ genre just because it is more commercial or less commercial than another. Cultures form around genres, thats just how powerful music in general is. If it sounds good or has a good feel and groove with beautiful melodies/vocals I generally enjoy the music, regardless of genre, how underground or above the ground it is. A good tune is a good tune. One mans cheese is another mans chocolate. Cheese and chocolate is subjective here. Over the past 13 odd years of DJ-ing @ nightclubs & events I have had the pleasure of playing many genres; Progressive House, Funky House, Progressive/Uplifting/Vocal/German Trance and many others in between. The time has come to create aliases to play and release certain genres of dance music under specific names to fit into certain cultures within dance music. Since the dance music phenomenon exploded in SA in the 90s a plethora of dance genres have made their way into clubs and events of all kinds, subsequently creating a sub culture for each genre as this happened. As the name Anton Nathrass I will play commercially acceptable genres ranging from progressive/melodic house to progressive/uplifting/vocal Trance with influences of other genres in between. As for the more underground sounds/genres I will be releasing and playing music under aliases which will be made public at a later stage. Its been lovely to be part of something bigger than one self, something that shapes by the contribution of all involved (DJs, Producers, Promoters/Club owners and you as the punter). I give thanks for being part of it and being able to share my perspective of it on dance floors. No man is an island, it is possible for me to be part of this because others are part of it. It is a co-creation that I am very grateful for. Heres to the future! As In Life, So In Music. As In Music, So In Life.
