Genting bus crash report: It won’t end up like Simpang Pulai The outcome of Genting stage bus tragedy report won’t turn out like the Simpang Pulai tour bus crash report. That’s the personal assurance given by Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein to the independent panel of advisors to ensure all actions and recommendations outlined in the Genting tragedy reports by the various agencies would be enforced. A member of the independent panel of advisors Datuk Foong Choy Chye told Cars, Bikes & Trucks that the minister has given his words and commitment that the follow-up to the Genting bus crash report must be executed. “The Minister has promised us that he will ensure all necessary steps and recommendations as stated in the Genting bus tragedy reports must be implemented and adhered to. He has also promised us this (Genting bus) report won’t suffer the same fate as the Simpang Pulai report outcome,” said Foong to CBT after the press conference chaired by Hishamuddin yesterday. The panel is an independent body formed under Hishamuddin’s office to compile and analyze all the reports and recommendations by various agencies such as Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, Land Public Transport Commission and police. The panel will then propose several recommendations to the Cabinet before end of the year. There have been strong calls for the government to disclose the report of Simpang Pulai tour bus crash that killed 28 Thai tourists in Dec 2010 – the worst tragedy - before the ill-fated Genting bus crash upped the fatalities tally with 37 lives and left 16 others injured three months ago. Among the individuals calling to unearth the report were the Independent Board of Inquiry chairman for the Simpang Pulai and father of modern road safety, the late Prof Datuk Radin Umar Radin Sohadi and Inquiry member Datuk Marimuthu Nadason, the FOMCA president. Two months before his death, Radin Umar wrote on Facebook: “Whats puzzling is what we have proposed before has not been made public by the authorities.” Unfortunately for Radin Umar, he didnt get to see the proposals and recommendations in the Simpang Pulai report yielded actions by the government. CBT understands that the Board of Inquiry had presented its report with findings and proposals two months after the tour bus tragedy to the Transport Ministry and then to the Cabinet. Words through the grapevine specified that Cabinet had asked the report not be made public because the Attorney General was instructed to study the report in depth. Until today, there was no further action from the Simpang Pulai report.
