George Orwell, incurable optimist that he was, assumed that government would rob language of its expressive power to prune the variety of thought one might express. Little did he know that journalism, or the pale, sickly, pathetic substitute newspapers are so eager to foist upon their readership these days, would take such keen leadership in mutilating our language. In a generation we will have more words to describe nuances of orange skin color, butt implants, and the bodily functions of celebrities -- and fewer words with which to describe our boundless capacity for shitting on democracy.
