German foreign minister concerned about worsening of situation in Donbas Kyiv, November 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has said he is concerned about the significant worsening of the situation in the east of Ukraine. Now the situation in eastern Ukraine is very difficult and menacing, and it is getting complicated, he told reporters after talks with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Tuesday. Steinmeier added that various options for resolving the conflict had been discussed at the meeting so as not to return to the threat of a military confrontation that existed this summer. In addition, he said, the sides discussed the implementation of the Minsk agreements. We know that the Minsk agreements foresee the resolution of very complex issues, but they need to be resolved, he said, adding that the issue concerns the release of hostages, the establishment of border controls, etc. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, in turn, thanked Steinmeier for his firm support for Ukraine at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday. We discussed a whole range of issues related to the stabilization of the situation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, the implementation of the [Ukrainian] presidents peace plan and the fulfillment of the Minsk agreements, Klimkin said.
