Get Off My Property: Discouraging Thieves From Targeting Your Home ift.tt/1ceGzb0 By Jerry Clark Theres nowhere in the world you can live where you can be absolutely certain that crime wont be an issue. Break-ins and burglaries are a concern of most peoples, and there are plenty of methods and systems to deal with intruders. But the best defense against burglars is to prevent them from coming to your home at all. Conveying a clear message to a thief that your home is protected is best way to keep him from targeting you at all. What are some ways to do this? Security System: Many modern homeowners wisely opt to install some kind of home security system. There are many recognizable brands out there, and it can be displayed noticeably on the outside your home with a sign or sticker that says something like Protected by So-and-So. There are both wired and wireless setups, and they each have their own merits. Wired systems are more of a hassle to install, but dont come with concerns like battery life that wireless systems may include. They are usually very simple to use. Its just a process of disarming or arming with a code when coming or going, respectively. On most, youll be notified (loudly) when a window or door is breached while the system is armed. Well-Lit Exterior: Thieves like the dark. They want to stay inconspicuous when they intrude into a home. Proper use of lighting can keep their number of hiding spaces and concealed entry points to a minimum. Most outdoor lights function on motion sensors, lighting up when they detect movement. The windows on the second story of your home isnt as appealing of a target when theyre lit up, and trying to gain entry through it would expose the burglar to neighbors. Canine Security: Theres a reason that guard dogs have been in use for centuries: theyre very effective at what they do. Most thieves wont even consider breaking into a house with a dog trained to call out and/or attack intruders. Caring for any animal is a big responsibility, and dogs arent for everyone. But if youre willing to put in the time and effort to train and care for it, a guard dog can be invaluable in protecting your home. At the very least, it will warn you when someone is approaching or inside your house, and many breeds will leap into action to attack intruders. Be sure to give the dog a steady supply of food and water, since hell be guarding when your away, and access to the backyard is best as well, both so he can relieve himself and deal with intruders who try to sneak in from the back The best fights are the ones we avoid. Most burglars prey on the weak, so keeping your home security visibly strong will ensure that most would-be thieves with any sense will keep on walking.
