Getting my first article (and photos) published in the New York Times means more to me than having my first book published. My career as a psuedo-celebrity began about four years ago when the Times published a big feature about me. I set out, very deliberately, to gradually pivot from being the subject of news in the Times to getting paid to write it. After four years of climbing, without so much as a journalism degree, I managed to sell an article to what is arguably the most prestigious newspaper in the world (although every other aspect of my life completely fell apart during that time). I want to thank Erin Bauer for being the first person to tell me I should write professionally, Janis Jaquith for driving me to the ER after the widow bite, Alex Cirillo for taking care of me in the ER, and all of my friends on Facebook for tolerating my creepy photos of black widows.
