Ghana, with a population of 25 million, has 38 think-tanks (2013), according to the study by University of Pennsylvania. Only Kenya and South Africa have more think-tanks among African countries. Ghana, which has been a stable democracy for more than a decade, and is by many seen as an African model Country is positioning itself as the gateway to West Africa, but the competition is stiff as rapid changes are taking place in many neighbouring countries. IMANI Center for Policy and Education, which could be considered a classical liberal think-tank, is ranked as 68 on the global think-tanks outside of the US, that’s higher than any think-tank in Italy. If the United States is included, Imani is still ahead of any think-tanks in Finland and Greece and most think-tanks in Sweden. And when the scope is restricted to think-tanks in Sub-Saharan Africa only, as many as six Ghanaian think tanks makes it to the top 100. Franklin Cudjoe is the founding President and Chief Executive Officer of Imani and a well-known speaker in global events such as the World Economic Forum in Davos. He is also an outspoken critic of the government in Ghana and a strong free-trade advocate. Cudjoe said the main reason for our humble success is that we have carved a niche in Ghana’s policy environment for putting out objective, independent analysis and critique on many issues, using tried and tested techniques that apply across different disciplines. Through effective communication skills and the ability to work with public-spirited media and civil society, we are shaping national, regional and global agenda in order to close the “citizen participation gap” in the governance process.------Upcoming Report of the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation in Sweden.
