Gilligan’s Island 50th Anniversary on Kauai Aug 28 Contributed by Adrian Sear (RA) The “Three-Hour-Tour” is about to have its 50th Anniversary… While it is no secret that Kauai has been the setting for numerous big budget movie productions (Jurassic Park, Six Days Seven Nights, Tropic Thunder, South Pacific…), it has also been the home for some very famous television shows. The fabulous waterfall shown at the beginning of each episode of Fantasy Island is none other than Kauai’s own 140’ Wailua Falls, which is a short 15 minute drive from the airport in Lihue. What could possibly be a more befitting way to start a week’s vacation in paradise! The show that is so loved by so many, though, and has been televised more than any other show ever made, is none other than Gilligan’s Island. Although the show debuted in September 1964, the pilot was filmed on Kauai in November of 1963. The setting chosen was Moloa’a Bay. This remote and very special little bay on Kauai’s northern coastline still eludes most who venture here. If you are fortunate enough to find it, the pristine beach really does give you the feel of a tropical oasis and one can easily envision the SS Minnow beached upon the sand with holes in its side. During the summer months, this can be one of the most picturesque spots on the island. The water color has to be seen first-hand to be believed. Be aware that parking is very limited down here and respect should be given to the residents and their driveways. The limited access is beneficial in keeping this oasis free from congestion and assists in maintaining its special charm. If you choose to set sail to Moloa’a Bay and have your own “Three-Hour-Tour on Gilligan’s Island”, get there early.
