Given some of the risks of more invasive procedures, Im an advocate for trying conservative treatments and therapies prior to going the more invasive route. With that said, there are times where more invasive procedures like injections can help patients get through a difficult time or a painful flare-up when all else fails. I have patients who are in enough pain at times to resort to lidocaine injections for relief and while they dont arent a cure, they can help with acute pain. If the pain isnt as severe, people tend to be able to tolerate manual therapies that address the cause of the symptoms a little better. CONCLUSIONS: For patients with sacroiliac joint [the hip on your back] pain, peri-articular injection [AROUND the joint] is more effective and easier to perform than the intra-articular injection [WITHIN the joint] and should be tried initially.
