Glancing to that place up the river where I dare to go. Where Ju Ba and Du Qin both met a terrible fate. The reeds along the shore sway in the wind... like so many thousands of legs wiggling upside down. The ripples in the water as we slowly trudge upstream betray the insects that swim there hidden like ghosts. Dreaming an end at the place Im told by many to Dare not go. No good, no reward, no prize, nor justice to be found. Omen after omen and day after day the dread builds up. Confident at the start. Scared evermore after. Exhausted now. To the spring, to the pool, and to the start of where the river begins. It is not a begining but an end! My men! Eleven hundred and forty-three... Three months and seven days took its toll. How, I dare not say! All are gone now except ten and me. Fewer rafts. A lot more fear. Back past the swaying of the reeds the rippling from the bugs. Abandoned docks too rotten too dangerous a vacancy. I weep for Ba and Qin, but who will weep for me? Not because I will die but because I survive. To tell a tale... Creating another me! He who will forge ahead up the river... To that Hell and to that place that I will dare not return! (a poem from one hero to another in a book Ive been working on)
