Glasgow We arrived in Glasgow elated after witnessing the excellent South Sydney win in an Edinburgh pub (Adrian not so elated, most possibly deflated as a bulldogs supporter). We checked in to our hostel and then walked the streets in search of dinner. The next morning we ventured in to the city to have a look around and were mesmerised by the beautiful architecture. We spent most of our day admiring the city and buying a few warm jumpers as our daily average temperatures started to decrease. On our second day we headed to the West End district, known for its cafes, bars and vintage clothing stores. We walked down the Main Street, finding a cafe to indulge in one of our new favourite breakfasts - scones with jam and cream. We then perished many of the charity shops, and there were many! We must have passed around 20 charity shops on the one street alone, full of clothes, books and trinkets. We also took a quick walk down a few of the side streets with their rows of beautiful sandstone town houses which are typical of the area. The Glasgow university is conveniently (for the students as well as for us on this particular day) located right near the west end hub so we decided to take a walk through the university grounds. It is truly a beautiful campus and felt to us as if we were on the grounds of Hogwarts - even one of the entrance halls was painted blue with an amazing high domed roof all decorated with gold trimming and gold stars. I also got particularly excited to see a squirrel which elicited a few odd stares from some locals. We walked back in to the city from the west end, passing a music venue which advertised live music every night. We decided to return in the evening and saw a few local bands who were grungy and particularly loud (I felt old as I stuffed some tissue in my ears as makeshift earplugs) supporting a main act called The history of Apple Pie, who, despite the odd name choice, were quite enjoyable and not as loud. On our last morning we took a walk to the Glasgow necropolis which is an amazing cemetery built in the Victorian era. Its enormous and located on a hill overlooking the city and the Glasgow Cathedral. As well as the view some of the gravestones are very impressive, as the pinnacle of the hill holds the tombs of many rich or noteworthy Glaswegians. That afternoon we met up with Roz and Shane to attend the Sharmanka kinetic theatre, a 45 minute show in which the bizarre mechanical creations of a Russian born artist who now lives in Glasgow are showcased. We then had some lunch and decided to go bowling. As well as enjoying two games of bowling we had a basketball tournament using the basketball arcade machines. After this we headed back over to the west end to take Roz and Shane to a restaurant we had passed the day before that looked nice. We finished our night in the pub with a last farewell drink as we wouldnt be seeing them again until they returned to Australia in January.
