Glassworts - Salicornia agg. - a member of the Amaranthaceae (Goosefoot) family, which also includes Sea-purslane, Annual Sea-blite and Oraches. Found in the salt-marsh areas of Ballymacormick Point 20/09/14. The common name Glasswort came into use in the 16th century to describe plants growing in England whose ashes could be used for making soda-based (as opposed to potash-based) glass. They are succulent salt-loving plants (halophytes). Like many members of this family the plants change colour as they mature adding a splash of colour as autumn approaches. They are like jewels when the sun is shining. You need to get down on your hands and knees to see them. There are several native species, but they are difficult to identify so I will leave that to any experts that might be in this group.
