God in His mercy sent Jeremiah the prophet to warn the nation of Judah about coming judgement. Gods people had sinned greatly & had become exceedingly evil. The time came when God could not let that go unpunished. God was about to use the nation of Babylon to judge & punish His people. God never delights in punishment. He told them that if they would repent they could be saved. God even said He would hold off His judgement if Jeremiah could find just one honest person in the entire city. “RUN UP AND DOWN EVERY STREET IN JERUSALEM,” SAYS THE LORD. “LOOK HIGH AND LOW; SEARCH THROUGHOUT THE CITY! IF YOU CAN FIND EVEN ONE JUST AND HONEST PERSON, I WILL NOT DESTROY THE CITY.” (Jeremiah 5:1 NLT) The similarities between our nation & the nation of Judah are striking. The people of Judah worshiped idols instead of the true & living God. They forgot God, and turned away from Him. They depended on themselves & refused to serve God or to repent. The prophet described the nation of Judah in words that are painful to hear. He said THEY FOLLOWED WORTHLESS IDOLS AND BECAME WORTHLESS THEMSELVES . . . (Jeremiah 2:5b NIV) Sadly, our country is fast resembling the worthless things on which we put great value. We hear complaints . . . Theyve taken the Bible, God & prayer out of our schools.” To an extent that may be true. But to me, worse than taking the Bible, God & prayer out of our schools is the truth of the matter that we in the USA have forgotten the Bible, God & prayer in our homes. Suppose God would spare our nation if one righteous person could be found. And suppose you were that person. Would your righteousness be enough to merit Gods forgiveness? It is not beyond comprehension that your righteousness, or lack of it, could be the saving of our nation. If you are not living according to God’s law, you might be responsible for the down fall of our nation. Thats a lot of responsibility. You might want to object & say, Im not responsible, Im only one person. We like to think sometimes that our sin, our sins, and our lack of righteousness do not really matter. BUT THEY DO! One person can make a difference. Suppose God was to say again “RUN UP AND DOWN EVERY STREET IN JERUSALEM,” SAYS THE LORD. “LOOK HIGH AND LOW; SEARCH THROUGHOUT THE CITY! IF YOU CAN FIND EVEN ONE JUST AND HONEST PERSON, I WILL NOT DESTROY THE CITY.” (Jeremiah 5:1 NLT) If God decides to spare our nation on the righteousness of one person, would your righteousness be enough? If not, repent & come to God, for the sake of our great country.
