Good Morning, Saturday was a delightfully mild day in the Tri-State Area, and the official high of 57 in Central Park was just one degree shy of the highest this thermometer has registered thus far in 2014 (it was 58 on 1/11)... But as expected, yesterday was much chillier as the leading edge of colder air arrived late on Saturday night... As we continue our roller-coaster ride today and tomorrow, the temperature should be trending higher once again -- but it will be plummeting sharply on Wednesday night and Thursday should qualify as the coldest day of the week... Such is life during the month of March in our little corner of the world... It isnt unheard of during the middle of March for the temperature to soar into the 60s and 70s, only to have it cold enough to support snow less than 36 hours later... So, when the temperature manages to peak in the upper 50s (even the lower 60s away from the immediate coast) tomorrow, you almost can sense that something will come along to upset the apple cart... That will come in the form of a low pressure system, which will be developing in the Plains states later today and tonight... It will manage to tap into some rich moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, and clouds will tend to increase late tomorrow and tomorrow night... Across the Great Lakes region and in east-central Canada, there is also going to be a bitter blast of cold air poised to strike... But first, we expect rain to develop around here during the day on Wednesday, with temperatures ahead of the approaching cold front still in the upper 40s and 50s -- and certainly high enough to support plain rain... But on Wednesday night, as a wave of low pressure tracks to the east and then the flood gates open on that much colder air, it seems most of the precipitation will mix with and abruptly change over to snow during the night... This snow should wrap up fairly early on Thursday... Even though the consensus amongst the models would indicate that about 90 percent of the 1.0 to 1.5 inches of liquid well get should fall in the form of rain -- were concerned about a rapid freeze-up occurring late on Wednesday night and early Thursday... Wet road surfaces and sidewalks may become icy just prior to daybreak on Thursday, when most temperatures should be in the mid or upper 20s... Thursdays temperatures should either hold steady or slowly fall through the 20s, and any period of snow that occurs during the morning should be brief... Drier and much colder air will be blasting into the region on a northwesterly wind, making it feel like it’s in the single digits and teens... Friday should not be as harsh, with some sunshine and temperatures in the lower or middle 40s... Some further moderation is expected over the weekend... Have a good day!!
