Good Morning, The Eastern Region is going to have a fairly sunny and warm Memorial Day holiday today… A ridge of high pressure which was located in the Ohio Valley and areas surrounding the Great Lakes about 36 hours ago should finish reconfiguring off the mid-Atlantic Coast today… Therefore, with the surface wind out of the west and southwest in most places, the temperature should soar well into the 80s this afternoon… There will be some cooler coastal communities, but in cases like this, even much of the Jersey Shore (with the exception being the barrier islands) can at least reach 80 degrees…It should be a great day for those who have been planning outdoor activities, and as we commented late last week, today should be the “best” of the three days this holiday weekend… The ridge of high pressure should start to drift farther out into the Atlantic tomorrow, and the focus of our attention will be turning to the north and the west… A series of weak low pressure systems will be moving across the northern Great Lakes and eastern Canada during the next 72 hours… Farther south, an uptick in the humidity/an influx of moisture is what should lead to more in the way of clouds tomorrow… Most high temperatures will still be in the 80s, but these won’t be quite as high as today’s… We will then have to watch for a couple of showers and a thunderstorm that will tend to flare up, primarily later tomorrow and tomorrow night… Any of these could bring with it a drenching downpour, especially later in the day and early tomorrow night… Wednesday will include some much cooler changes for the Tri-State Area and in southern New England, since a back-door cold front is being forecasted to push down from the north and east… With clouds limiting sun on Wednesday due in large part to a temperature inversion, or warmer air will be located above the boundary layer when compared to at the surface, there will be many places in the Northeast which will fail to get out of the 60s… Conversely, there are still going to be many places in the mid-Atlantic region that have one last opportunity to get warm… As this back-door front continues to press to the south and west - pushed along by a ridge of high pressure nudging southward along the Northeast coast, even some of these cities will have trouble climbing out of the 60s or lower 70s on Thursday afternoon… With cool and moist air being pushed into Maryland, Delaware and South Jersey on Wednesday night and Thursday, we should also be talking about the possibility of multiple showers and a thunderstorm or two as this front may act as a catalyst for rain… In the Tri-State Area, Thursday may not bring any rain, but it should be fairly cloudy and cool with afternoon temperatures no higher than the upper 60s... Although the temperature may start to trend upward again on Friday, we still must consider the possibility that more showers and a thunderstorm or two may occur… This time, the culprit won’t be the back-door front draped along the Eastern Seaboard… However, another cool front which will be pushing down from the north and west should trigger some rain, and then drier air is expected to arrive next weekend with temperatures near the seasonal averages (mostly in the mid or upper 70s for the last day in May)… There is going to be a “timing issue” with this front, because the G.F.S. seems to be ‘slower than’ other global models when it comes to its movement through the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states… So, if there was a reason to be “pessimistic” about Saturday, it is that we may still have to deal with a couple more showers… There could be a significant warm-up on the way about seven days from now, with some of the larger cities possibly seeing their first 90-degree readings of the year next Monday/Tuesday…. Have a good day!!
