Good day to you all, There is a saying that goes something like this, “ Be careful of what you wish for. It might come true.” In this case, I am glad to say, that it looks as if the Palestinian Authority’s wish for the recognition of a miniscule Palestinian State on 20% of the historical land of Palestine is not going to come true. No surprises there, not when you know who the enemy is and who is having that enemy’s back, as they fondly say. At the end of November the Arab League endorsed a Jordanian/Palestinian draft resolution to be submitted to the UN Security Council. This resolution calls for the recognition of Palestine as a state based on the 1967 borders and compels Israel to end the occupation on a two-year timetable. The Israelis have been hopping mad and they are using everything in their power to kill it. There have been symbolic moves in that direction by some well meaning though misguided European governments. I say ‘misguided’ because though this is just a gesture it does not take into account the ramifications of such recognition. Which are the legitimizing of the theft of 80% of Palestine, no right of return of the millions of Palestinian refugees scattered around the world, leaving Gaza in limbo and abandoning the two million Palestinians who live in Israel who were rendered as unwanted guests at best and fifth class citizens since the declaration of Israel as a state exclusively for Jews last month. Nevertheless Israel is against it and as such all the cheerleaders, lead by the United States of America are coming out with a song and dance that spells ‘No, No No’. I, as a Palestinian who is totally for a just, equitable and lasting peace in Palestine am also totally against gesture politics and symbolic moves. If the international community is serious about finding a lasting and just solution in Palestine it should redefine its subservient relationship to Israel and stand, for once, on the right side of history.
