Good morning FBF. I had the pleasure of seeing an outstanding vocalist last evening for a very personal, 2 hour + set. Rachelle Ferrell was at the Motor City Casino ‘Sound Board’ music venue. It was a very good concert. First, a few props to the venue. This was my first time at the Sound Board. Wow! Extreme high tech, just the right size, out of this world sound system, a screen behind the musicians with lots of eye candy, etc.. Rachelle Ferrell is an outrageously wonderful singer. Wikipedia says she has a 6 octave range and she showcased that on each song. In addition to her range, she could scat with the best of them! At the high end, an opera singer and/or Minnie Rippleton come to mind. At the low end, I heard Al Jarreau at his best. Wikipedia says she can sing in the ‘whistle’ register. She was a bunch of fun to listen to. Stop! Go to Spotify and pull up ‘I forgive you,’ and u will understand how much I went into orbit when she sang that song! It was easily worth the cost of admission! For the majority of the crowd, ‘Nothing has Ever Felt Like This,’ seemed to be the signature song. Apparently Rachelle’s first life was with the late great George Duke, who passed away last year. Rachelle spent a good amount of time talking about their association. She cried in doing so. remember? I said it was a very personal evening with this gifted vocalist. There was a church feel to much of the evening. I go to church, so that was OK, but not exactly what I came for. Also, for my tastes, there wasnt enough jazz. She sang fairly short versions of My funny Valentine and Bye, Bye Blackbird. That was it. What made this very good concert something less than a great concert was the mix between singer and musicians. It was 90-10. I would have appreciated 60-40. The band was so incidental it got on my nerves. She had 2hrs + to work with and each of the 3 band members got exactly one short solo a piece. Every song, I mean every song, was strictly about her amazing voice. As a former musician, that got just a little tired for me. But if u came to hear nothing but the vocalist, you were in the right place. The concert ended with a sing along that was very clever and brought me to my feet for the final ovation. So again, a very good, not quite great, concert. I had a nice time.
