Good morning! Happy Dance Fact Friday everyone! Today’s dance fact comes from the Biography website. Did you know Maria Tallchief was the first Native American woman to become a ballerina?! In fact, she was the first ever prima ballerina of the New York City Ballet! She kept that title for 13 years straight. During her time at the New York City Ballet, she worked with George Balanchine, who mentored our artistic director Robert Weiss. Tallchief and Balanchine actually married in 1946, but separated shortly after in 1951. She passed away in April of last year, but Tallchief is still remembered as a significant figure in ballet history. Read more about her in the article below.
