Good morning. Its day 11 of our 21 Days of Prayer. Today our thought comes from our Discipleship director, Don Brown: What the world needs now is love, sweet love.. Well, what the world needs not just now but forever is love, real love. If we are to have a place which draws in the unchurched, we need to show real love in all we do on Sunday morning. Jesus was a perfect picture of perfect love. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life, and that Way includes real love – a 1 Corinthians 13 sort of love. We hold a Worship service on Sunday morning, and Worship involves showing our love for Jesus. He made it pretty clear what we need to do to show Him love. He told Peter, “If you love me, feed my sheep”.. not once, but three times.. If the Master of the Universe says something once, I’m going to take notice.. when He says it three times in a row, I think I’ll have it inked on my arm. In Matthew 25, Jesus makes it clear to two different groups of people, both calling Him “Lord”, that it’s the one who feeds, clothes, and cares for His people that is showing consideration to Him. I read what happens to both of these groups and I know which one I want to hang out with. This type of love doesn’t originate in our emotions, but it certainly affects them. The emotional center of our minds is what provides the motive force for our actions. Happiness is one of these motive forces, and worldly pursuits quite often cause us to be consumed by the pursuit of happiness. The selfless type of love we are called to exhibit in worship of our Lord doesn’t focus on happiness, however. Its effect on our emotional center is really at the other end of a spectrum of emotions, producing Joy. Even scientists who deny the existence or importance of God will recognize the difference between emotions of happiness and joy. The selfless love that produces Joy in our emotional centers winds up motivating actions that we characterize as Beautiful.
