Good morning, and happy Thorsday! I hope you all have a good day today :) As I said yesterday, I shall tell you about Thor today! Thor, son of Odin and Earth, was the most loved and respected of all the gods. Whilst Odin stood for violence and war, Thor represented order. With his hammer Mjollnir, which was not only an instrument of aggression but also of fertility, he kept the Giants at bay, and was strong enough to fight the world serpent, Jormungand. His name was often invoked in the name of law and order. Thor was the cause of thunder and lightning. The thunder was from the wheels of his chariot, and lightning from fragments of whetstone lodged in his head. In the words of Adam of Bremen; Thor was held to control the winds and showered, the fair weather and the fruits of the earth. In the myth; the lay of Harvard, Thor championed the farming population, which constituted most of the population, whilst Odin championed the nobly born. This physical image fitted this role: huge, red bearded, a massive appetite, quick to lose his temper and quick to regain it, immensely strong and dependable. Heres something new for you, something that quite honestly shocked me (in the most mildly of ways). According to the eleventh historian Adam of Bremen, he says that the eddaic poets actually exaggerate Odins significance, and says that it was infact Thor who was the greatest of the norse gods, and that in the great temple as Uppsala, his statue occupied the central platform between Odin and Freyr! Hail Thor, Son of Odin, and protector of Midgard. - Gunnar
