Good news everyone! After receiving complaints that the Maths Computer Lab is often booked and no-one is there I followed up with IT and faculty have implemented a new system for the booking. Now unused PCs are available to all students! There is a short period of time where the computers are blocked out so to understand the system here is a description emailed to me about how it works: 15 min before the booking starts (usually on the hour), the full reservation kicks in that prevents non-class members from logging into reserved PCs. 10 min before the start, non-class members are logged off. At 10 min past the start (so usually 10 past the hour), the reservation switches from full mode to dynamic mode. In dynamic mode it checks how many students use the reserved seats. That percentage is matched against 8 benchmarks, and the reservation is scaled back accordingly. Example, if only 48% of the reserved PCs are used, then the reservation drops to 50% of the full booking. This means that if the entire lab was reserved, half will free up. If only half the lab was reserved, then half of that half will free. If there are no class-members logged into any of the reserved areas, then all of the reservation is freed. Note: If utilisation increases, eg more student come for the 2nd hour of a two-hour booking than were there for the 1st hour, the reservation will increase accordingly to make sure that enough free seats remain for any extras. However, non-class members who are already logged into PCs that are suddenly again within a reserved zone are allowed to stay on. Enjoy your study break! xoxo Education
