Good piece by Khaya Dlanga on how white privilege was at play in keeping the Oscar Pistorious incident under wraps. This article took me back to how the Beeld broke the Reeva killing as an accidental shooting where Oscar shot her thinking she was a (black) burgler. What strikes me is how the same white privilege is at play in the tonality if the article. He was assumed to be innocent upfront. Everybody (white and black) I interacted with that morning (my wife included) had already framed him as a victim, like Reeva, in a terrible accident. Even now as I watch Ch 199 I still see moving inserts of Oscars past that serve to seek people to pity and/or sympathize with him. Anybody seen that type of balanced coverage for Brix? My simple question is whether the Beeld would have framed the story in this way had it been an incident involving say Lucas Radebe? I argue not. Heres why I say so. Based on how quickly this very same publication amongst others were quick to frame a very innocent victim of unjustifiable police brutality (Khuli Chana) as an instigator was eye opening for me. With the exception of Karyn Maughn of ENCA who took the time to investigate the story thoroughly and expose the sham that was the SAPS defensive strategy to mitigate a possible lawsuit. It should be further be noted none of these same agencies that played a hand in sullying the reputation of this young man have not followed up the story to report that the so called water tight case the SAPS has been received by a a decline to prosecute by the National Directorate of Public Prosecutions. Why should this matter to these news agencies? Hell he is black so the logical end point of this narrative surely is that he must have had a criminal intent of some kind right...? Things to think about critically...
