GoodNews Bible Ministries Inc. Message for the Week: He (Jehoram) followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. (2 Kings 8:18 NIV) FLEE POLITICAL MARRIAGES AND ASSOCIATIONS: King Jehoshaphat arranged the marriage between Jehoram, his son, and Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel - the wicked king and his treacherous wife. Athaliah, as expected, followed the idolatrous ways of the northern kingdom, where her father ruled bringing Baal worship into Judah thereby activating the obvious decline of the southern kingdom. When Jehoram died, his son Ahaziah became king. Then, when Ahaziah was killed in battle, Athaliah murdered all her grandsons except Joash and made herself queen (Read 2 Kings11:1-3). Sometimes our parents, guardians, friends or peer group lure us into relationship that appear lucrative on the surface, giving us numerous reasons why it is wise to enter such relationships. Even though we know that such relationships portend great danger of physical destruction and spiritual death in the future, we still go ahead to enter them while convincing and consoling ourselves with reasons that only further confirm the futility of our decision. Today, marriages are arranged by class and economic or social status of parents, expecting that the relationship will end happily ever after. Many of these relationships and marriages were actually dead on arrival and many are still going through the agony of these wrong decisions. CONCLUSION: The marriage of Jehoram to Ahabs daughter may have served some political and economic advantages to him or his family, but spiritually it was deadly. Are you heading for a marriage or relationship that is only politically or economically convenient, but spiritually disastrous? Take a second thought, reject relationships that are not spiritually expedient and enter only into fruitful and life-giving relationships and be free from political manipulations and certain destruction. PRAYER: Lord, I receive grace to keep off all unfruitful relationships from now henceforth. Amen.
