Goodbye Steinway Hall (after 90 years) ... it was the first place - TopicsExpress

Goodbye Steinway Hall (after 90 years) ... it was the first place I visited when coming to New York City in 1960 - when QRS (music rolls) was located in the Bronx, my reason for the journey from California as a young person. A gold-painted 9 D concert grand was in the Window surrounded by LPs by Roger Williams who used that instrument for one of his recordings. Inside, there were various show rooms of historic decor (Louis XV, Jacobean, Louis XVI, etc.) but were stuffed with standard case instruments that did not reflect those interiors ... when they were built to show off Art Case grands of the 20s in their proper setting. I was very impressed. The new Steinway Hall sounds like it would be far less impressive (at least, for me). No ghosts of Josef Hofmann or Ignace Paderewski would be present in what appears to be a muffler shop decor. Am glad that they are continuing to produce fine pianos, but another part of the City will be gone ... sad. npr.org/blogs/deceptivecadence/2014/12/27/372730314/steinway-bids-farewell-to-its-historic-hall
