Gospel: Lk 7:11–17 Jesus went to a town called Naim and many of his disciples went with him—a great number of people. As he reached the gate of the town, a dead man was being carried out. He was the only son of his mother and she was a widow; there followed a large crowd of townspeople. On seeing her, the Lord had pity on her and said, “Don’t cry.” Then he came up and touched the stretcher and the men who carried it stopped. Jesus then said, “Young man, awake, I tell you.” And the dead man got up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. A holy fear came over them all and they praised God saying, “A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people.” This news spread out in the Jewish country and the surrounding places. Reflection: Our gospel presents two stories of loss and restoration: the widow who lost her son but received him back alive, and the son who lost his life but received it anew. In both stories, it was Jesus who restored what was lost. Our own lives are endless stories of loss and restoration, too - lost possessions, lost jobs, lost relationships, lost dreams. Sometimes the losses are minimal or manageable, and we are able to move on without much effort. But at times the losses can be devastating, draining not just our energy and resources but our faith and hope as well, we find it difficult to get back up on our feet and move on. Thanks be to Jesus our Restorer! He may not always do away with the source of our pain, as he did for the mother in the gospel. But he always offers us a new life, as he did to the son. He may not bring back exactly what was lost, but He revives our faith and hope so we can dream and live again. He does more than just restore-He renews! -In His Steps
