Got dinged or scratched up trim that you want to make perfect - TopicsExpress

Got dinged or scratched up trim that you want to make perfect again? You can actually fix it yourself with some patience. Step 1: Mark the damage. Lay the trim against something flat (like a dolly). An anvil on a vice will also work in a pinch. Take a body pick hammer and work the dent back out, but do so carefully to avoid creating high spots. If you dont have a nice body hammer, a regular hammer and some punches will also work in a punch. Step 2: Take a file and file the area until the texture is consistent and all high spots are removed. Congratulations, theres no going back now and you just scraped the $hit out of your trim, but dont worry! Step 3: Time to get the scratches out. This picture shows what it looks like removing all of the file scratches using 180 grit. This is the most painful part. Once thats done, move up to 320 grit to remove the 180 grit scratches. Step 4: Work up to 1500 grit (or beyond), use blue magic metal polish, and steel wool. You can go higher grit if you want, but I only cared enough to stop there. Looks fantastic, no more dents, and no more scratches.
