Got two bits of news this morning that have me thinking. (Oh, no! Shes Thinking! Auuuuuugh!) Bit one, that its now Twitter where we turn for as close as were gonna get to actual news. Unfiltered, uncensored, unconsidered, but maybe closer to true than weve ever seen news. Bit two, that the police department in Ferguson, Missouri, has 53 employees. Three are minorities. Three are female. I think we can assume that something like 50 percent of the folks living in Ferguson are female, and reports are that the minority population is something like 80+ percent. May have that wrong. Of course, I have no idea what minority means: is that folks whose skin tone is higher than 5.5 on the Armani Complexion chart? If women are only represented with 3 bodies on the police force, isnt that pretty minority? And, yes, I know, Im from California, with one toe practically in the Pacific Ocean and the other in the redwoods, so you have to forgive me my radical ideas about equality. To me, its kinda like the old joke about being pregnant. You either are or you arent. No grey area. Equality? You either are equal under the law or youre not. Folks in Ferguson, and folks in Washington, DC: when youve got pretty much nothing but white guys making all the rules, thats not equality. Were getting there, in halting ways, but we aint there yet.
