Gov. Shettima mets with U.S National Security Advisor Governor Kashim Shettima in company of his colleagues from 11 northern States has met with the U.S National Security Adviser, Sussan Rice at the White House in Washington,capital of the United States of America. The meeting which held Tuesday, behind closed doors focused on how to permanently address the current security challenges in northern Nigeria which Borno State suffered most. The meeting was facilitated by the United States Institute of Peace which strongly invited Governor Shettima to the U.S to make presentations on security situation in Borno State and hold discussions on the way forward. During the restricted meeting that was also attended by the visiting Governors of Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, Katsina and Zamfara, Nigerias Ambassador to the U.S,Professor Adebowale Adefuye and National Security officials of the United States, Governor Kashim Shettima articulated the situation in Borno State, highlighting challenges, successes recorded by security forces and youth volunteers popularly nicknamed the civilian JTF and on finding permanent solutions to guarantee the return of peace and posterity in all parts of the State. Participants at the meeting had fruitful discussions. On Wednesday, Governor Kashim Shettima alongside his colleagues, was also at the United States Agency for International Development where discussions on areas of cooperation and intervention on Education, Agriculture and other developmental sectors were discussed with increased commitment shown by the U.S to accelerate sustained development in northern Nigeria. Governor Shettima and his colleagues were at the United States Center for Strategic and International Studies for discussions. The Governors at different points met other high level officials that include Linda Thomas Greenfield, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, top officials of the U.S state department, the Norwegian Ambassador to the U.S and top officials of the Norwegian Foreign relations, peace and reconciliation sections among many others with the aim of attracting areas of support towards the northern Nigeria. Governor Kashim Shettima had throughout the week met his colleagues on daily basis at the United States Institute of Peace and interacted with researchers and experts that made different presentations on the security challenges in northern and giving expert advise on how to address the challenges. Governors from different States shared experiences and compared notes at different sessions that were mostly moderated by U.S Ambassador Johny Carson who is chief host as advisor to the United States Institute of Peace,convener of the symposium. The symposium that focused on security challenges, economic prospects and commercial opportunities in the Northern Nigeria ended on Wednesday. Before departing Washington, Governor Shettima paid an unscheduled visit the Voice of America headquarters. He held preliminary discussions with the director of the VOA, David B. Ensor, the head of Africa desk and chief of the Hausa service unit to explore areas of support that willl enhance the human resource and technical capacity of the Borno Radio and Television. The meeting agreed to arrange visit of technical experts from the VOA for a need assessment. Meanwhile, Governor Shettima today arrived Lincoln in Nebraska State and is scheduled to meet with the Governor of Nebraska to explore areas of cooperation on irrigation Agriculture. Nebraska is regarded as being one of the worlds famous centres of irrigation.
