Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, on Monday, swore in 12 newly-appointed commissioners, with a charge to them to exhibit high level of integrity, commitment and service to humanity. The commissioners comprised five members of the former cabinet and seven new ones. One of the new commissioners, Princess Oyefunke Oworu, is a former Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade, Investment and Cooperative, while Prince Gbade Lana was the Chairman of the State Library Board before his appointment as a commissioner. Those recalled included Mr. Adebayo Ojo, Mr. Dapo Lam-Adesina, Mr. Zacheaus Adelabu, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin and Princess Adetutu Adeyemi-Aigbe, while the five new ones were Prof. Solomon Olaniyonu, Hon. Adewale Olujide, Engr. Adedeji Akande, Mr. Umar Alao and Mr. Abiodun Atanda. Speaking at the ceremony held at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Ajimobi said that the appointment of the commissioners was based on their educational background, individual track records and good characters, political and religious background, party recommendations and the belief of his administration in aggressiveness, assertiveness, adaptability and consolidation of its achievements. Reacting to insinuations that his new cabinet was made up of children of traditional rulers and elite, the governor said the new commissioners were appointed based on their individual merits and not necessarily where they came from or their family background. He chided the opposition for launching unnecessary attack on his administration in order to score cheap political point. ``The opposition will always say something. In fact, it will be unfair of them if they don’t criticize us. That is why they are there but our own responsibility is to do the job while they continue to criticize. The world is for those who strive hard and not for those who sit back and criticize. ``We remember when we conceived the idea of constructing the fly over at Mokola, they said `Oh, you cannot do it; it’s never done’. When we started, they said we could not do it. Later on, they said they were the ones who had earlier dreamt about it, even though it was first thought about in 1976 and these same people came to say they thought about it. But we came around and we did it and they said it would not work but we accomplished it,’’ he said. Governor Ajimobi, while thanking the former commissioners, said that they contributed their quotas towards the development of the state, adding that his administration would continue to embrace politics of development. He added that his administration would continue to maintain credibility, integrity and quality to take the state to greater height. ``We believe that Oyo State must be taken to a higher level than we met it. We believe we want Oyo State to be a proud state and be seen and counted among the comity of modern states in Nigeria,’’ he said. To the new commissioners, he said ``you are in the second phase of the ship and we believe you have enough capabilities and strength to be able to sail it through. I hope you will contribute commendably to this administration. Those who are lucky to be back, I commend you. Those who are new, I challenge you and I believe you will find me friendly if you work very hard; if you don’t work hard, I am not a nice person. ``Be reminded that what you do, they will criticize you but what is important is to make sure that you give in your best and if you strive hard enough, you will succeed,’’ he said.
