Governor Ortega Strengthens LU Sports By: Israel O. Rudio Provincial Information & Tourism Office The Province of La Union is expected to remain as an athletic powerhouse as Gov. Manuel C. Ortega signed Executive Order No. 10 Series of 2014 titled “Reorganizing the La Union Fitness and Sports Development Council (LUPFSDC)” last September 30. Section 3 of the Executive Order mandates the LUPFSDC to conduct sports summits in consultation with the Philippine Sports Commission and other stakeholders to identify and prioritize sports programs and activities. It shall also coordinate and ensure the planning, implementation and monitoring of physical fitness and sports programs and activities in the province. To discover new talents and widen its rooster of top-notch players, it is tasked to identify, recruit and train gifted and talented athletes in the province. Prior to the signing of the Executive Order, the LUPFSDC was successfully reorganized last September 25. The officers are Governor Ortega, Chairman; Vice Governor Augusto Aureo Q. Nisce, Vice Chairman; Dr. Rowena C. Banzon, Division Superintendent of Department of Education-La Union as Secretary General; and BM Manuel Victor R. Ortega, Jr. as Executive Officer. Members are BM Alfredo Pablo R. Ortega, President of the Philippine Councilors League-La Union Chapter; BM Nancy Corazon M. Bacurnay, Sangguniang Panlalawigan Committee Chair on Education and Culture; Dir. Teoticia C. Taguibao of the Commission on Higher Education-Region I; Dir. Paulino G. Lalata, Jr. of the Department of the Interior and Local Government-La Union; PSSUPT Ramon L. Rafael, Director of the La Union Police Provincial Office; Mayor Sandra Y. Eriguel, President of Mayors League-La Union Chapter; Ms. Delia A. Ortega, National President of Special Olympics Philippines (SOP) and Region I Coordinator for Philippine Sports Association for the Differently-Abled (PhilSPADA); Renato Cariño, Jr. from the Think God Basketball Team; and Dr. Mauro A. Libatique, Jr., Provincial Planning and Development Coordinator. The identified committees are Special Olympics Committee chaired by Ms. Delia A. Ortega; Special Events Committee chaired by BM Manuel Victor R. Ortega, Jr.; Dep Ed Sports Committee led by Dr. Rowena C. Banzon; Batang Pinoy Committee chaired by BM Alfredo Pablo R. Ortega; and PhilSPADA Committee headed also by Ms. Delia A. Ortega.
