Gratitude Note: For Mary Elizabeth, my wonderful Mother-in-law. She came from rather humble beginnings in College Springs, Iowa. She worked her way through college earning an education degree. For many years she taught at a business school in Kansas City. Her students were not the cream of the crop, but she not only taught them, she listened to their stories and loved them. After breast and bone cancers, two major strokes and a host of other physical and personal challenges, this survivor continued to tell us about her students -- even at the age of 87 she wondered what her former students were doing now. But there is more. Mary, Lyndas Mother died Thursday morning after a brief battle with Type A Flu and Pneumonia. In the midst of our grief and as we were packing up Mary things in her room at Heritage Villa Nursing Home, one of the aides, Laura interrupted us. I had already heard her story from Mary, but she was eager to tell us herself. Laura said, I had been working here in housekeeping, but wanted to be an aide and maybe a nurse. When I told Mary my dream, she told me I could do it. She became my cheerleader. I started school. Whenever I got down, she would boost me up telling I could do it. And I did. I am a certified aide and want to go to nursing school. Mary was very proud of me and I loved her. I am going to miss her terribly. Thats Mary, my Mother-in-law, to the end -- a Light shinning in the darkness for others. Blessed Epiphany to All and Thanks Be to God.
