Grayson here.. This ones gonna be tough so please bear with... After 3 years of playing together, War Chief will be taking a break to re-organize and re-focus, effective July 1. Heres some of the details... -Chris Brummett has decided to leave the band in order to focus on his new job. Other than mhyself hes the only one of the original band members left. Hes really grown as a musician since weve been together. Hes also been a good friend through some tough times. Weve done things musically that we never tought would be possible when we started playing in April 2011 and built and re-built the plane in the air more times than I can count. Its still pretty fresh so its a little overwhelming to think about him not being on stage with me. -Brent is getting ready to focus more on his solo project, Civil Soul. While he hasnt been with the band as long as everyone else Ive really enjoyed getting to know him and he may be the best all-around musician Ive played with. Ive never seen him pick up an instrument that he wasnt amazing at (FUN FACT: Brent was almost WCs keyboard player before Blake and Prestion joined!). Hes just a really good dude and I cant say thanks enough for jamming with me. -I always mention Preston and Blake together because they came in at the same time, are roommates, are late to practice together and really came in and gave War Chief a 1-2 punch when it needed it most. That punch helped with the writing & release of The Broken Heart EP and tied everything together. The best way I can describe it is that they made War Chief sound like I imagined it in my head when I was writing songs. Over the last couple of years Ive loved playing music with them and the endless back-and-forth and bullshitting has really made it a lot of fun. The 3 of us are gonna sit down and talk about things including the fact that their band, Open Fields playing a lot of shows and really starting to take a life of their own! You should check them out soon if you get the chance. We want to make sure that both groups get the love they deserve and now its their turn for a bit. -So what about me? Well lets see.. Honestly I feel like David Tennant when his time as the 10th Doctor was up (Dr. Who, anyone?) and Ill quote him in how I feel about all this: I dont want to go. I love being in War Chief. I love being on stage with all these guys and I like the way it feels when everyone starts leaning forward and the Rock n Roll takes over (if youve been in that position before you know what I mean). I love getting ready for a big show like weve done for multiple Riverfests, Wakarusa, Harvest... Hell any number of awesome things weve done. This band, the songs, the fans & friends and family (some all of the above) have been the only thing I had that mattered at some points in my life and I love it dearly. I dont want it to be over, and frankly I dont really think it is; at least not yet. I want to keep on going. I know that Preston and Blake are both interested in carrying on and that may yet happen, but I dont want to just insert some replacements and keep going as a watered-down version. So Im gonna take my time with it, talk to some people and see what rises out of the ashes. Ive even put thoughts into perhaps moving down to Austin or Nashville with my pretty new wife and re-forming the band there and making another push in a fresh new town. You never know, but the point is that I still see a War Chief taking the stage in the future. Maybe sooner than later, but only when its right. All that to say were going to put her to bed right... Ive got some dates in the works to visit a few of our favorite haunts and perhaps even a few new ones before we finish this chapter and the plot thickens! At the absolute least, should Preston, Blake and I carry on I want to make sure that Chris and Brent know how much weve enjoyed them being in the band. So stay tuned and hopefully you can catch us within the next couple months and hug our necks. Other than that, its a beautiful day here in Little Rock, Arkansas! Sunny, 75 degrees and, hopefully, someone loves you.
