Great Northern Beans And Ham Hocks Dont Forget The Cornbread 1 lb Kroger Great Northern Beans Dry (16oz) 4 oz Smoked Ham Hock 1/4 cup raw onions chopped 1 1/2 teaspoon salt at least 1 teaspoon pepper Soak beans beans over night. Rinse beans and set aside. Boil ham hock in a large pot of water for 10-15 minutes. Add beans, onions, salt and pepper. Bring beans up to a boil then reduce heat so they are just above a simmer. Cook for 2-3 hours until done. Check often to see if more water is needed. When beans are done remove ham hocks pick meat off and return meat to the pot. Taste to see if you need more salt and pepper. Serve nice and warm with cornbread!!!! Cornbread 2 cups cornmeal OR 1 1/2 cups cornmeal and 1/2 cup flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 to 2 Tbsp sugar (optional) 1 1/4 cups buttermilk 1 egg (optional) 6 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted 1 Tbsp bacon drippings Put the bacon fat in a 9 or 10-inch cast iron skillet and put the skillet into the oven. Then preheat the oven to 400° with the skillet inside. Whisk together all the dry ingredients in a large bowl. In another bowl, beat the egg and buttermilk until combined, then mix that into the bowl of dry ingredients. Stir in the melted butter. When the oven is hot, take out the skillet. Add the cornbread batter and make sure it is evenly distributed in the skillet.
