Great comment that expresses my sentiments on this issue exactly: Two points. White male of no color is the default in this country. Thats why some feel as though they are overlooked when in fact the entire culture has been created around them. Place a unnamed professional resume on any HR person desk. Lets say that its a typical MBA type, state school, etc. The assumption is that it will be a white male until discovered otherwise. The fact is despite the gains that women and minorities have made into lower and middle management positions, once you go beyond middle management the environment becomes almost entirely white male. The complicate the issue, these arent just any white males, they are the elite. They are basically the same group that was in charge a 100 years ago. The average white male will never make it into this group. Hes forced to compete at the lower levels. The issue is that in the past he only had to compete against other white males, now he must compete against women and minorities therefore things have gotten more competitive for him. The second thing, the whole no culture thing is once again is failure to recognize the default American culture as a culture. If you dont think there is a common American culture just travel to other countries. You dont realize just how much of an American you are until you are elsewhere in the world. Ive seen examples where people who would probably never socialize or even meet in the US all of a certain bond outside of the country. At that point were all just Americans. Kind like when immigrants come to this country. China has scores ethnic groups, but once here theyre all simply Chinese and we view them all the same.
