Great to have the support of this group for Awareness week. Wikipedia bibic takes part in Irlen Syndrome Awareness Week Posted on October 9, 2014 by Porcupine PR We are taking part in Irlen Syndrome Awareness Week, which runs from Monday, October 20 until Friday, October 24. As we have been providing screening assessments for Irlen Syndrome for a number of years, we wanted to get involved and educate people on the condition. Approximately 15% of the population has the syndrome, which is the brain’s inability to process visual information, affecting daily functioning. Often people do not realise they have a problem at all. Patients of all ages can experience symptoms, which include light sensitivity, headaches or migraines, difficulty or discomfort when reading, eye strain and distorted print text. Irlen Syndrome is more common than heart disease or asthma and can affect people’s daily quality of life. Currently 50% of individuals with reading and learning difficulties and 30% of people with ADHD and autism struggle with the condition. Failure to identify and treat Irlen Syndrome can have severe consequences, ranging from academic and workplace failure or ongoing physical and emotional symptoms, to increased likelihood to enter the criminal justice system. Research into the syndrome has found that visual processing can be significantly improved with personalised spectral filters. We are able to screen anyone up to the age of 18 for Irlen Syndrome. We can identify whether they have the syndrome and the details of the difficulty they are having. We can then help them arrange the particular lenses and overlays they need. It is quite a quick and inexpensive treatment and the difference it can make is huge.
