Great turnout this morning for the ceremonial Turning of the First Sod at the site of the new Marlin Coast Mens Shed. Young Will, my aged four, was still digging almost to when I left. What a little champion! Two State Government grants of $34,167.00 through Round 77 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund and $13,525.00 through Round 34 of the Reef Casino Community Benefit Fund saw the realisation of the members’ dream to have their own shed, with area enough for both socialising and working. It’s great to see these guys, who collectively have an abundance of skills and energy, channelling their enthusiasm and experience into constructive activity. They do so much good work for the community. The new shed, of Besser block construction on a concrete slab, will have an area of 20m x 8m with a 3m verandah on one side and one end. A local builder and local tradies have offered to construct the Shed gratis, which has left members full of gratitude and with funds spare to spend on internal fit out, including quality equipment such as drop saws, lathes and various woodworking tools. Well done guys, and a big thank you to Sharon Morgan of Cairns Regional Council who has been a huge help to the Marlin Coast Mens shed in achieving this exciting goal.
