Greatness they say is not in words but in deeds, and to say the obvious Obafemi Awolowo University is the crescendo of greatness in Nigeria, and her students are embodiments of greatness. Though to say the truth recent happenings have rather exposed our achilles heel and left us vulnerable, but the truth is you are not yet a failure until the vicious circle of failure is complete, which is to give up and quit believing in yourself. Analyzing the process however will show that we were already heading towards the last stage of the vicious circle until the management through the leadership of the union came with a ludicrous reduction. Believers will say God has a way of vindicating the righteous, and it is fitly said in a Yoruba proverb that if the son of a righteous man is on the brink of falling into a pit, a great light will shine on his path. Great Ife students are the righteous ones in this context, and a great light is shinning on our path to save us from falling into a bottomless pit and from committing an irredeemable error. We have been gifted a leverage which we cannot afford to take with levity, once again we are on the brink of success, we are on the verge of regaining our lost title, and at the same time we are at precipice of a generational error and forgetfulness. The leverage which the university management has gifted us is slapping us with a ludicrous reduction, irrationality in their approach, neglect of certain faculties and the outright neglect of fresh students who are by far the nucleus of our struggle. If we are to analyse the situation holistically, we have little or nothing to lose by engaging the university management –at least if for the last time. I say this because realistically the school cannot afford to merge two sets, and with their level of greed, they can’t afford to let go of the money they will collect from next year freshers, thus they have to do all within their power to make sure we meet up with the normal calendar. If we believe that the school is on the verge of reopening because of the benevolence of the university management we are being fools, the truth is they have no choice but reopen at this moment. Another reason why we have nothing to lose is dependent on the fact that it is unheard of that the university management will close down the school twice in a semester. It gives no other impression than apparent cluelessness, ineptitude of monumental proportion and inefficiency, which may lead to the removal of the VC himself. And for what purpose will our going home be if we cannot achieve our set goals, it is better we achieve victory so as not to betray the main reason why we were sent home. The only verdict is tenacity. Of the Greatest Ife, two roads now diverge in a yellow wood before us, whichever road we choose will make the difference, though both will make a difference but the consequence of each road is as far as heaven is to earth. One will make us historical heroes, while the other will make us villains. It is ours’ to choose if ALUTA WILL CONTINUA or not, the response to this will be critical in determining whether VICTORIA WILL BE ASCERTA...
