Greece: FIRE-FILLED #Athens clashes on anniversary of teens killing Clashes between police and protesters brought Athens to a standstill on Saturday night, as thousands commemorated the sixth anniversary since the police killing of teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos. Protesters could be seen setting various objects including cars and ATMs on fire while throwing Molotov cocktails and other objects at police, with police in anti-riot armour firing tear gas at the demonstrators. The anniversary coincides with the hunger strike of 21-year-old Nikos Romanos, a close friend of Grigoropoulos, whose hunger strike started November 10 after he was refused access to prison education programmes after he was sentenced for robbery. Doctors report Romanos to be in serious condition. The clashes broke out after roughly 6,000 protesters marched to commemorate Grigoropoulos, who was 15 years old when he was killed in 2008 by two police officers in central Athens Exarcheia district. Grigoropoulos death resulted in large protests throughout Greece, and solidarity demonstrations around the world.
