Greensboro Treats: I have been to Greensboro, NC a handful of times. However, this is the first trip where I have really ventured out, with my lovely wife and family, and I feel it necessary to pass along some of the awesome treats to taste and things to do. Any visit to Greensboro that does not include a trip to the International Civil Rights Center & Museum would be almost a waisted trip. This was an awesome museum (housed in the F.W. Woolworths store and site of the first sit ins) highlighted for us by the most wonderful tour guide possible. Ms. Anita Johnson (Exhibition Tours Coordinator/Tour Guide) will take you on an emotional trip through time. Ms. Johnson grew up right in the heart of Greensboro during those tumultuous times and you can feel her passion for each piece of history and her North Carolina A & T alma matter pride as she explains what life was like for the founders of the sit in movement. I left feeling educated, inspired, and incredibly fortunate for having been there with Ms. Johnson. The shops along South Elm Street provide an eclectic array of shopping for even the most free of spirits. Just Be is a quaint shop, tucked in just across the street from Natty Greenes, that shows a wide range of products for sale created by local and free trade artists. We found great additions for our home there! As far as food goes, Greensboro is fantastic! Elizabeths Pizza, Lox Stock & Bagel, Iron Hen, Big Burger Spot, Natty Greenes, MCouls Public House, Cheesecakes by Alex, and Delicious Bakery are just a few of the places in the area. You cant go wrong with any choice at Elizabeths Pizza (if Ivy is with you, then olives are a must!). The Italian Sub (genoa salami, cappicola, provolone, imported ham, sliced cherry peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion, special dressing, on a sub roll) with a root beer at Lox Stock is a must. The Iron Hen has the best Reuben (Giacomos corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, and Russian dressing on Asiago peppercorn bread) complete with a very good deviled egg and hand cut fries. I topped it off with Natty Greenes Buckshot (a delightful amber ale). Big Burger Spot is another treat for the tastes. On Mike Garrigans recommendation I went with the classic burger and ventured out with the classic fries with cajun seasoning. It was awesome! The perfect proportion of meat, bun, and condiments. Natty Greens is the place to stop and have lunch on South Elm when out shopping. Michelle and I split the Turkey Razz (oven-roasted turkey, ham, applewood-smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, havarti cheese and raspberry mayo on toasted wheat berry bread) with homemade chips and a nice bottle of Buckshot. After more shopping/walking a stop into MCouls Public House will be in order. The atmosphere and drinks are an Irish delight! My day was polished off with two cheesecakes. The chocolate raspberry cheesecake at Cheesecakes by Alex is the best! A close second was the red velvet cheesecake bar at Delicious Bakery! All in all Greensboro is Great!
