Greenville Gay News for September 2013 What a great turnout in Greenville for the Lottie Moon run last Saturday. The weather was perfect with cooler temperatures and lower humidity making every step of the 5K a bit quicker and lighter. The race is well balanced with every age participating. One very young runner told me he was tired of competing as this was his third year for it! Jim Byce took first place in the over 75 category and is to be commended for his enthusiasm and yearly participation. Over a hundred walked or ran and along with the silent auction, the event raised over five thousand dollars for missions. The overall winner was Michael Loutzenheiser from LaGrange with a time of 20:06. Many thanks to Kelly Ledford and Shelley Lester for their organization and management of the event and a special thanks to all those volunteers from Miss Susie directing the racers at one intersection to the many who held back traffic and made the day safe. Thanks to those homeowners along the route who distributed water to the runners and gave cheerful encouragement. This Sunday, the 22nd will be very memorable for those of us who have watched Casey Harpe grow up. He will be ordained at the Baptist Church in Greenville at 6 pm. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. This is a very special time for Casey, his wife Valerie, and mother Lynn, and they invite all friends to celebrate with them. The ladies of the Methodist Church have been especially busy lately: last Saturday night the men of the church treated them to a catered dinner provided by Chad Garrett plus entertainment by the Cornerstone United Methodist Quartet. Monday evening at their regular UMW meeting they met Carolyn Barnes’ brother Richard Albertson who presented a program on his ministry in Florida, “Live the Life.” Hannah Flynn enjoyed lunch at the Highland Country Club in LaGrange on Tuesday where she and members of Lions and Rotary and others were hosted by the Troup County Republican Women. Governor Deal and Sandra Deal spoke to the group-he on the economy and she on her “Read across Georgia” initiative supporting Gov. Deal’s goal of increasing the percentage of children reading at grade level. Congratulations to the FRA Lady Cats Softball Team. They beat Stratford on Monday. It’s always good for the morale to beat a bigger school. Locally Rick McManus is directing and coaching the one act play cast as it gets ready for the first of the fine arts competitions held between the region schools. Students are preparing for Homecoming, the first Friday in October, always a fun week. This weekend FRA will hold its Founder’s Ball at Georgia Hall. The social hour begins at six with dinner and dancing following. It should be fun to see the alumni reunited. The Meriwether Historical Society has an exciting fall picnic planned for the 29th of September. The venue will be the historic Hiram Warner-Clark-Gabriel home. Special recognition and presentations are to be made. Call Sallie Mabon for more information and to make your reservation for the picnic. The Merry Weather Garden Club will be meeting y, September 25th at 10 am at Marilyn Carter’s home in Woodland. The speaker is Terri Edwards and her topic is "Gardening as we get Older." Marilyn and Lynda Woodall host the meeting and they will be serving a light lunch. Contact either of them for more information and to Rsvp. Our Greenville Patriots have this Friday off and will next host Marion County on the 27th. The Manchester Blue Devils also have this Friday off and will host Bowden on the 27th. LaGrange College Panthers have this Saturday off and host Greensboro on the 28th. And speaking of football I was quite proud of my Texas Aggies last Saturday, and Johnny Football almost pulled out the win over Alabama. The game was called the most watched regular season football game in decades. A & M is well supported by the many Auburn fans in our West Georgia area! Looking for the perfect, long lasting Christmas gift? Greenville’s Better Hometown that has done so much for the stunning look of our downtown is selling pavers to fund the next streetscapes project that will complete the other two sides of our court square. The pavers have been well received and never a weekend goes by that you don’t see visitors walking the sidewalks and reading the pavers’ messages. It is a super memorial for a loved one and a great way to recognize the deserving. Call Sally Estes for information and the form that allows you lots of space to create a memorable message.
